Vegetation Restoration Intern ( CAVO )Expected Dates August 16, 2021 to February 6, 2022 SiteSand Creek Massacre National Historic SitePosition IDPO-00732068Come join us at the nearly perfectly shaped and preserved volcanic cinder cone, standing more than 1200 feet above the surrounding high plains of northeastern New Mexico. Surrounding the cinder cone volcano is a Pinyon-Juniper savanna of native grass interrupted by igneous rock outcroppings. Capulin Volcano is just one of about 100 volcanic features in the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field, which covers about 8,000 sq. miles in northeastern New Mexico and southeastern Colorado. The eruption of Capulin Volcano is one of the most recent eruptions (approximately 60,000 years ago). More than 15 square miles of associated lava ?ows extend beyond the monuments boundary. The breathtaking panoramic view from the crater rim provides opportunities for education and scientific investigation of natural and cultural landscapes including how the features were formed and how the volcanic landforms helped shape the human history of northeastern New Mexico. Help us use vegetation to stabilize the delicate cinder slopes, fight invasive species, and restore native plants to the savanna.Duties include:- Seed or plug native plants into restoration areas. (40%)- Identify and treat invasive plants through chemical and mechanical methods (40%)- Grow native plants in greenhouse for planting in revegetation areas (15%)- Monitor treatment areas and complete documentation with photo imagery, GPS location data, etc. (5%)Capulin Volcano National Monument is part of the High Plains Group Integrated Resource Management Division. The intern will be a critical part of a small team, which provides many opportunities for involvement in the decision making process. Each person has the potential to make a big impact for the monument! The work week will be 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Conditions will often require working outside in hot or cold weather and hiking over rough terrain. UTV training will be required. This position is ideal for detail oriented individuals who ?ex well between team and solo work. Greenhouse, farm/ranch, or other plant experience is ideal but not required.Compensation amounts:+ $160 - weekly living allowance+ $1,100 - round trip travel allowance+ $3,097- Americorps eligble education award upon completion of service hours+ Housing provided*All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes+ Location DescriptionCapulin Volcano National Monument was established in 1916 and covers 800 acres in northeastern New Mexico. The park includes a perfectly shaped cinder cone volcano, pinyon savanna, and a Mission 66 Historic district. On a clear day you can see 4 states from the rim of the volcano! Raton is 30 miles from the monument and is the nearest city with groceries, restaurants, theater, museums, and the regional medical center.+ Training ProvidedOn the job training will be on-going throughout the internship to include pesticide use systems, application procedures, UTV operation, identification of native and invasive plants, and mechanical removal methods.+ Educational/Recreational OpportunitiesOutdoor recreational activities abound at nearby state parks in both New Mexico and Colorado. The houses are multiple occupancy. Rooms can be single or multiple occupancy depending on availability but are currently limited to single for Covid-19 precautions. The houses are not sex-segregated. Each house has 1.5 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, dining area, and a living area. The space is furnished. There is a nice yard space behind each house with a view of the volcano.
